I’m gonna be honest. Cute food isn’t usually my thang. I tend to gravitate more towards simple classics like chocolate chip cookies or humble bundt cakes.

But something about the holiday season brings out the cute in me. Suddenly, I want to pull out the craft glue and glitter and make the ugliest Christmas sweater you’ve ever seen. I want to make paper chains counting down the days until December 25th and string popcorn around the tree and turn my food into edible Christmas decorations.

Hence, these super adorable, festive Oreo Cookie Ball Santa Hats. I just couldn’t help myself. When Oreo said they were looking for holiday renditions on their classic cookie ball truffle, I knew this could only end one way: Santa hats–complete with marshmallow poof and sparkly trim.

I’m sure you’re probably familiar with Oreo cookie balls. They’re a simple, three ingredient combination of crushed Oreos and cream cheese dunked in chocolate. I shared the original version of this holiday treat on this post (warning: lots of talk about the N*Sync Christmas album in that post!)

The great thing about the Oreo cream cheese mixture is that it’s totally moldable and adaptable. You can add different extracts to change up he flavors, roll them in coconut or sprinkles or nuts, or mold them into different shapes–like a Santa hat!

And as cute as these are, they really don’t take a ton of work. They’re completely no bake and can be made in the time it takes you to watch Elf. So invite some friends over and make it a holiday party!

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • 36 OREO cookies
  • One 8 oz. block cream cheese
  • One 12 oz. bag white candy melts
  • One 12 oz. bag red candy melts
  • 20 mini marshmallows
  • About 1/4 cup white sparkling sugar
  • About 1/4 cup shredded coconut
  • 2 deep bowls for the candy melts
  • 1 small bowl for the coconut/sugar mixture

Here are things that you don’t need, but make the process even better:

  • wax paper
  • toothpicks
  • a wet rag or paper towel
  • N’SYNC Christmas Album
  • Giant mug of steaming hot cocoa

Here’s the breakdown:

Step 1: Pulverize the OREOS in a food processor until they’re in fine crumbs. Alternatively, place them in a ziplock bag and crush them with a rolling pin. Stir in the cream cheese until thick and combined.

Step 2: Shape the truffles. I found the easiest way to do this was to take about a 1-1 1/2 inch ball of the truffle mix then roll it in between my hands, making one side thinner than the other (that will be the point of the hat). Then press the larger side down onto a piece of wax paper to form the base of the hat.

Step 3: Freeze the truffles for 30 minutes.

Step 4: Meanwhile, melt the candy melts in two different bowls. I usually do mine in 1 minute intervals on 60% power until smooth. Mix the coconut and sparkling sugar together in a small bowl.

Step 5: Assemble your supplies. Lay the wax paper out on a flat surface. Gather your marshmallow, toothpicks, a wet rag, and bowl of candy melts and coconut.

Step 6: Dip the truffles. Dip the tips of the truffles in the red candy almost to the bottom, then set them upright on the wax paper. While they’re still wet, place a mini marshmallow at the peak. Repeat with remaining truffles.

Step 7. Once marshmallows are dried and stuck to the top of the truffles, dip the tops of them in the white candy melts then immediately into the coconut mixture. Place them back on the wax paper.

Step 8: Once the tops are dry, dip the bottoms in the white candy until they meet and slightly overlap the red space. Then, immediately dip them into the coconut mixture, spinning them around to cover. Set them flat on the wax paper. You may want to give them a little shove so the bottoms puff out and around the hat.

Step 8: And there you have it! A tasty, festive, party friendly, and of course, totally adorable treat!

Can I get a ho-ho-ho??

    1. These are so cute, Courtney! However, I’m cursed with the inability to make anything look cute and adorable, so mine would definitely look like a hot mess. I’m loving your photos too – these are gorgeous!

    2. I am the EXACT same way Courtney. Normally not into the crafty stuff…then suddenly I’m cutting little “Be Merry” banners and putting glitter on everything. It’s that time of year!

    3. G’day! ABSOLUTELY love your cookies, true!
I have a VERY special childhood connection to them, so thanks for making me smile today too!
