Time Flies! An Airplane Themed Birthday Party

Today I’m sharing a few of my favorite moments and details from our 1 year old’s (<<WHAT??) airplane themed birthday party!

Inspiration and ideas for an airplane themed birthday party! Somehow an entire year has passed since I first held my tiny, wrinkly, red faced baby in my arms. I’m not sure whether to laugh, cry, or celebrate, so I’ve done a good mixture of both the past few weeks. When it came time to plan little P’s first birthday party, I knew it had to involve flying things. We have an adventure theme nursery, and ever since he was a tiny guy, he has loved anything hanging, floating, or flying through the sky.

I finally settled on an airplane themed party, and I had so much fun planning it, I decided I had to share! I hope you enjoy this peek into our first birthday party celebration!

From invitations to decorations to food, this has everything you need for an adorable airplane themed birthday party!

My gifting is definitely not in crafty, matchy themed birthday party planning, so I felt a little lost in the beginning. I decided to start with the easy stuff: invitations. Before this, I had no idea you could purchase invitation templates from Etsy then print them at home. I bought these adorable invitations through Lex & Livi’s shop. They’re really affordable, have a quick turn around time, and were a huge time saver for me.

Once I had the invitations, I began to look for matching decorations anytime I was out and about. I found some great blue stripe napkins (pictured under the plates above) and red and white penants at Target. As always, Pinterest came through for me, and I found this awesome idea to make cloud placemats for the tables. Amazon also has these cheap and cute foam airplanes, which were great centerpieces and were fun for the kiddos to toss around at the party.

We also bought about 20 balloons to use as decoration and markers for the different food and drink stations. I used these free airplane theme labels and taped them halfway up the balloon so they would “float” above each station. On the extra balloons, I taped pictures of little P from his first year.

Of course, the food was my favorite part. I had a hard time coming up with something to fit the airplane theme, then my friend suggested doing “Flying Tacos” instead of walking tacos. I LOVED that so we used my favorite walking tacos recipe and served it up with plenty of toppings, guacamole, and watermelon.

Of course, it wouldn’t be a birthday party without cake! I used this yellow butter cupcake recipe to make cupcakes and a 6 inch smash cake for the birthday boy. I also made my favorite double chocolate cupcakes, and frosted everything with this amazing cloud frosting. It is wonderfully light and fluffy, and a dream to work with. I frosted his smash cake with a simple blue frosting with dots of white clouds.

Suffice it to say, the cake was a huge hit. He had no problem digging right in!

My sister in law snapped this picture of us as we were opening presents, and every time I look at it, my heart just explodes. We feel so humbled, blessed, and grateful for our little family. This sweet, silly, curious boy fills our days with joy and laughter. He is a ray of sunshine to everyone he meets. Whether it’s banging on pots and pans, putting an unidentified object in his mouth, or playing hide and seek with the curtains, he keeps us running and laughing and chasing after him all day. We go to bed each night exhausted but filled with thanks. I’m so glad we got to celebrate his first year with dear friends and family, and can’t wait for the years to come. Happy Birthday Sweet P! We love you more than words can say.

  1. Thanks for sharing the pictures of the party with us. He looks like a little doll. What were you thinking with the bright turquoise icing? Lol It makes quite the mess.
