These Red Wine Burgers with Caramelized Onions and Goat Cheese are everything you love about a classic burger, but with a major flavor boost.
It’s been one of those “everything falls apart” kind of weeks. It’s the busiest week of the year at my job, and of course, this is the week everything else in the world decides to go crazy. In the past 7 days, the Mr. has gotten stitches and a hacking cough, the back of our house has sprung a leak (and a disturbing patch of mold), I’ve locked my keys in my office, and the flowers have started audibly begging me to water them (at least, I think they have, but that could just be the lack of sleep talking).
Y’all it’s not pretty around here.
When the Sunday Supper theme for this week was posted, I was pumped about it. I mean, who doesn’t love Labor Day, right? Cookouts, a day off from work, soaking up every last inch of summer’s sun. Plus, I knew these Red Wine Burgers with Caramelized Onions and Goat Cheese would be perfect for the occasion.
But that was weeks ago, and the truth is, today I’m exhausted. My brain feels like a mud puddle. I can’t even think of one darn witty thing to say.
I thought maybe I should just cancel this post, cut out for the week, and take a break.
But here’s the great thing about Sunday Supper. Sunday Supper isn’t about being perfect. It’s not about having it all together. It isn’t about having a spotless house, flawless table settings, or a perfect hostess smile. Heck, it’s not even really about the food.
Sunday Supper is all about gathering. It’s about bringing people back to the table to talk, share, and eat together. It’s about connection, relationships, community–setting aside time to care for each other.
At the Sunday Supper table, everyone is welcome. Whether weary or energized, joyful or discouraged. There’s no dress code, no requirements. It’s just an invitation to come, rest, taste, be.
The truth is, I need the table. We all do. We all need a place where we can come just as we are–brain mush and all–and be welcomed and loved.
So today, I’m not only bringing burgers to Sunday Supper, but I’m bringing me–the exhausted, stressed out, ragged, hair back in a pony tail, sweat pant wearing me.
And the burgers?…Well, they’re just an added bonus.
These Red Wine Burgers with Caramelized Onions and Goat Cheese are everything you love about a classic burger, but with a major flavor boost. The red wine makes them taste ultra rich, while the goat cheese and caramelized onions add sweetness, texture, and tang. These burgers are the perfect bridge from summer to fall. They’re all fire charred summer days lingered with cool, dark red wine nights. These are easy to make (if you can stand to spend 30 minutes letting the onions caramelize) and plate really beautifully. Serve em on pretzel buns and the whole party will go crazy. Trust me.
I want to take a minute to thank the other Sunday Supper members for creating this virtual table and for always offering a warm welcome. This is truly a special group, and I’m so thankful I get to be a part of it.
I hope this Labor Day you get a chance to share a supper with the ones you love. Come as you are. Taste. Share. Encourage. Laugh. Because that’s what Sunday Supper is all about.

So glad! Thanks for coming back to let me know!
These sound amazing! But i have a important question as id like to make them this week. Can you substitie red wine for a grocery store red cooking wine? Please get back with me soon. Thank you again
Debbie
That should still work Debbie! Good luck!
This is beyond amazing, Courtney! I love these flavors together. Totally drooling!!
Love what you said about Sunday Supper! It really is all about the gatherings! So glad you are a part of it. These burgers look heavenly! Caramelized onions and goat cheese are two of my favorite toppings.
These burgers… omg! They need to get in my life (ie my mouth!) immediately!!! Happy to have found your blog ๐
Thanks Ashley! So glad you stopped by!
You know how to make a burger! This is pure perfection and if I could I’d lick my computer screen!
that is one beautiful burger!
Don’t worry, I’ll take you. Sweat pants and all. Especially if you bring these burgers. Goat cheese and caramelized onions, whaaaaaaat?
Ugh, so sorry for your bad week. I’ve been there, that’s for sure. And also, yeah….sometimes, there’s just nothing witty or interesting I want to say in a blog post. Sometimes I just want to say “ummm…hey…here’s this recipe. Cool? Bye.” hahaha.
All of that being said, your burger looks absolutely delicious, and I bet it would make any bad week feel a little bit better!
That is EXACTLY what I’d like to do sometimes. So glad I’m not the only one. ๐
I hope this week will be better for you ๐ We all have weeks like that. I think all meals where you sit down with your family (and really pretty much everything in life) isn’t about perfection. It’s about doing the best you can.
That’s exactly right. It’s so easy to get caught up in making everything perfect when the real purpose is simply to take time to eat together.
I am SO glad that you visited my blog so that I could find and follow your BEAUTIFUL blog! I love, love, love these little burgs and saved them for making soon! It seems like all heck breaks out at one time doesn’t it? One thing about Labor Day, we really do need to stop and take a break from all that we work at. I hope that you enjoy your holiday and nice to ‘meet’ you again, Courtney through Sunday Supper!
Great to meet you too! I love when Sunday Supper brings new friends. Thanks for visiting!
Awww, Courtney, I know that feeling. That horrible, awful, ragged, bone-tired, exhausted feeling. I’m sorry to hear about all the craziness but I’m glad you had a bit of respite with these ohmahgawd delicious burgers (seriously, they look freaking amazing!) and pulling up a chair to the Sunday Supper table. I haven’t joined in all month and I really miss it. Fab post, girl!
Thanks Nancy. I had missed two weeks and was really missing it, so I knew I had to pull it together, even if my brain wasn’t happy about it. ๐ I never regret it when I do.
Wow I’m practically drooling looking at these pictures!! Goat cheese and red wine are a match made in heaven!
I’m so sorry you had a bad week but you’re so right about this group that motivates us all to forget all our troubles and come together!Your burgers look and sound fantastic!I love the red wine in there and you’re right, they are the perfect bridge from Summer to Fall!!

I love your sentiments – with two little ones, sometimes I want to back out because my recipe or photos aren’t perfect. Bt I love being part of the group, even though since the baby was born, I don’t get to tweet or comment as much as I used to. And these burgers! Oh my, these burgers! Pinning them and I seriously must make them since I adore beef, wine and goat cheese.
Thanks so much. It’s so great to have such a supportive group. I hope you enjoy these as much as we did!
Oh my wow looks delicious.
Oh, my goodness,Courtney, you are rather incredible. With all the stressors in your life, you’ve produced a gourmet burger. A beautiful one with caramelized onions and goat cheese! Bravo!
P.s. Looking forward to making a perfect crust using your tips. Nancy from Gotta Get Baked – another incredible lady – highly recommended your post so I’ve bookmarked it =)
