Today I’m taking a little break from recipes to give you a taste of our adventure in Butler County, OH, home of the donut trail! I’m taking a brief break from recipes today to share a special Mother’s Day post that’s been on my heart for awhile. Do you ever feel like you have a mean girl in your head? Sometimes I feel like Regina George is resting on my shoulder, pointing out my flaws, and reminding me of all the ways I don’t stack up. The things we say to ourselves in our heads are often far worse than anything we’d say to another human being. And you know what? I’m tired of listening to the mean girl in my head. I hope this post will spur us to treat ourselves with kindness, patience, and grace even in the midst of our failures. You are precious, friends. Thanks for reading along and I’ll be back with more recipes next week!
Baking is my love language, and one of my best expressions are these Blueberry Oatmeal Muffins. When I feel helpless or can’t find the words to say, I make these simple, hearty, nourishing muffins. They’re an offering, another way to let the ones you love know you care.
The annual Gifts that Give Back Guide is one of my favorite posts of the year. This year, I’ve included loads of ideas for meaningful, unique, and lovely gifts for everyone on your list. The organizations included are doing amazing work to transform lives and communities throughout the world. I hope you have as much fun reading the guide as I do making it, and even more fun using it to shop for the ones you love!
I’m bringing a tender heart and these Red Wine Baked Mushrooms with Crispy Parmesan to the table today. I hope you’ll pull up a chair and join me.
Alright, y’all, I promise we’ll be back to your regularly scheduled recipes next week, but I had one more baby related post to share as we wrap up this first year of parenthood. We are decidedly less-is-more parents on the whole. I remember looking at the giant baby checklists offered by baby stores and feeling Read More

When I began assembling this collection of gifts that give back a few weeks ago, I had no idea how many inspiring businesses and organizations I would find. I had to cut myself off eventually, because I could’ve spent weeks researching, pinning, and admiring the amazing products and work being done by socially conscious businesses and Read More
Here’s the truth. Today’s post was supposed to be a recipe for using up Halloween candy, particularly those mini chocolate bars we all love so much. Then, an article popped up in my newsfeed. Hershey’s, Mars, and Nestle were in the news again for accusations of child labor in their chocolate supply chain. I’ve heard and even Read More
Many, many months ago, I dreamed of an adventure themed nursery with hot air balloons and airplanes, vintage maps, and suitcases. And after many months of planning, hammering, painting, sweating, sewing, and fixing, Baby R’s room was finally (pretty much) complete! At times our progress felt painfully slow, but it has been so rewarding to see Read More
Can we all just take a collective big breath in and say a little prayer of thanks that warm weather has finally and officially arrived? I know I’m about to be seriously pregnant and that by August I’ll be waddling around in a pool of my own belly sweat, but I am just so happy it’s Read More
I’m on vacation this week in Charleston soaking up some beach time, savoring these moments with the Mr. before the baby comes, and eating ALL THE HUSHPUPPIES. In my mind the perfect vacation involves two things: good food and good reads. If the weather’s bad, the hotel kind of sucks, and the beach is crowded Read More
My goodness. Another month has disappeared before my eyes. Where is the time going? And why do beautiful, sunny days seem to go so much faster than dreary, rainy ones? And why aren’t all jeans made like maternity jeans? I never want to see another zipper in my life. Stretchy waistbands FOREVER! Here we are on Read More
I know I’m a food blogger so I should be doing this gender reveal with some adorable heart shaped cupcakes or extravagantly decorated cake pops. But we already know I don’t really do cute food, and the truth is, I’m way too excited to share the news to mess with all that fancy schmantzy stuff Read More
Winter dealt out its worst for us in February, but despite the less-than-ideal weather, this month FLEW by around these parts. October 15th was National Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Day, and it also marks the one year date of our miscarriage. Last year, this month was marked by excitement and planning, quickly followed by disappointment and grief. A whole lot of grief. I spent the rest of 2013 going through the motions, doing what needed to be Read More
Ah, October. The leaves are changing, I’ve broken out my plaid shirts, and there is a distinct rustling in the air. As hard as it was to let go of summer, I’m embracing fall with open arms now. Let’s talk about June. June is like that guy you dated for a hot second back in college. There were a few blurry weeks of thrills, and then it died faster than you can say “single again.” I was just starting to get to know June and now it’s gone. I really would have loved to see Read More
Tell me friends, when it comes to grocery shopping are you in the love it or hate it camp? For me, it entirely depends on where I go. There are certain stores that make me think pulling my hair out a single strand at a time would be more enjoyable than attempting to buy a Read More
I now interrupt your regularly scheduled recipes for pictures of the beach. Is it just me or does time craaaaawl during the winter and sprint during any season where the average temperature is above 40 degrees? The closer we get to summer, the faster time seems to fly by. Already, our schedules are filling up with weddings and garage sales, camping trips and vacation. Don’t get me Read More
You all know by now that we really love eggs around these parts. Eggs are what I make when I don’t have a plan, when the fridge is nearly empty, and when all I want to do is crash on the couch and watch Arrested Development until my brain leaks out my ears. Even when Read More
Can you believe it’s been a whole month since the last leftovers post? Where the heck did March go? Not that I’m particularly sad. Still there was plenty to love in Read More
I know this may be hard to believe, but I actually do have a life outside of making food and talking about my issues with laundry. I read stuff. I stalk food blogs. I’ll admit, this season hasn’t been the easiest for Read More
Fluffy cinnamon spiced apple pancakes stacked high with pecans, bacon, and sweet cider syrup. I know things have been a little quiet around here this week. You may recall The Great Chocolate Chip Cookie Experiment of 2011. Each cookie had to be baked on the same pan, in the same Read More
Image courtesy of Mihai Tamasila If anything characterized the first 6 years of my adult life it was change. Movement was a rhythm of sorts, as sure as the changing seasons. It feels like it was just a few months ago when I finally quit writing 2011 by accident. Now, here we are, with another impending date change upon us. It feels so terribly old to say this, but time really does fly. I remember people telling me that when I was younger. I would laugh Read More
These Pumpkin 7 Layer Bars are ridiculously easy to make and gluten free! I’m going to be honest. It’s been a rough week around these parts. Today is my birthday, and this…. …is my birthday cake. It doesn’t have sprinkles. Or frosting. Or a scripted “Happy Birthday” swirled across the top. It doesn’t even have chocolate. And you know what? I wouldn’t ask for anything else on my birthday. This, my friends, is my all time favorite (FAV-O-RITE) cake. I know Read More

People used to tell me time goes by faster as you get older. I never thought about it much, but the older I get the more I’m beginning to understand what they meant.
