Ingredients

  • 4 cups milk (whole or 2%)
  • ¼ cup cocoa powder
  • ¼ cup brown sugar
  • cup semi sweet chocolate chips
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Generous pinch of sea salt

Instructions

  • Combine milk, cocoa powder, and sugar in a medium sauce pot on the stove. Whisk together well. Heat over medium heat, whisking often, until the mixture is steaming and tiny bubbles appear around the edges. Do not boil.
  • Turn the heat to low and add the chocolate chips, stirring until they're melted completely.
  • Remove from heat and add vanilla extract and salt. Serve immediately with whipped cream and/or marshmallows, if desired.

Notes

For a single serving:
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 Tablespoon cocoa powder
  • 1 Tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1 ½ Tablespoons semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • Drop vanilla extract
  • Pinch salt
Feel free to use oat milk and vegan chocolate chips for a dairy free version of hot chocolate.
