Easy Honey Syrup Recipe

Have you ever found yourself trying to squeeze honey out of those impractically shaped bears or stir honey into an iced coffee without spilling it all over yourself?
Has honey ever made you feel like you’re in one of those black and white montages before an infomercial? WHAT TO DO? THIS HONEY IS RUINING MY LIFE.
Ok, so maybe it’s not quite that dramatic, but it does feel darn near impossible to stir honey into cold drinks or get the last bit of honey out of the container.
Well, the answer to all our honey-related struggles comes in the form of this two ingredient honey syrup. In five minutes, this honey simple syrup is ready to take on any task you have for it: stirred into cocktails or my favorite honey latte, drizzled over pancakes or breakfast banana splits, or soaked into lemon zucchini bread for an extra special treat.
Ingredients
- Honey– Any kind of liquid honey will work here– raw, local, clover, wildflower, manuka–whatever you happen to have on hand.
- Hot Water– Yep, that’s it.
How to Make Honey Syrup
There are two methods you can use to make honey syrup.
- If your honey isn’t too old or thickened, simply place 1 cup of honey in a jar with a sealing lid, add the hot water, and shake until combined.
- Got old, crusty, hard honey? Honey syrup to the rescue! Place the honey and water in a sauce pan and heat it over low heat, stirring often, until the honey is softened and incorporated with the water.
Tips:
Honey syrup is not an exact science. I prefer a ratio of 2 parts honey to 1 part water, but you could do a 1:1 ratio or anything between. I like the 2:1 ratio because it’s thick enough to pour on pancakes, but still thin enough to incorporate into drinks without watering them down.
These measurements do not need to be exact. You can totally eyeball this one! Add some honey to the jar, eye ball the liquid, and shake. No need to dirty more dishes.
Storing Honey Syrup
Honey syrup can be stored in a glass mason jar, but I like to transfer it to one of these lovely glass oil bottles from World Market. A cheap plastic squeeze bottle also works.
Because of it’s antibacterial properties, honey syrup will keep in an airtight container at room temperature for a few weeks. If you want to keep it longer than that, refrigerate it.
My Favorite Honey Bottle Hack
Are you ever left with a little bit of honey in a jar that you simply CANNOT get out? Just pour a few tablespoons of hot water directly into the jar and shake, shake, shake! It should loosen up the remaining honey and allow you to use every last bit of the jar. Instant honey syrup!
Uses for Honey Simple Syrup
I initially developed this honey syrup for use in my favorite Honey Lattes, but since then I’ve found so many more ways to use it!
- Stir some into an Old Fashioned for a delightful twist on a classic.
- Use equal parts honey syrup and lavender simple syrup for a Honey Lavender Latte.
- Sweeten homemade tea lattes with honey syrup.
- Stir honey syrup into lemon shake ups or mint tea.
- Drizzle it over ricotta pancakes, fruit salad, yogurt, chia pudding with fruit, or ice cream.
Honey Syrup
The easiest honey syrup made with just honey and hot water! Great for adding to cocktails, lattes, and teas, or drizzling over pancakes or yogurt!
Ingredients
- 1 cup liquid honey
- 1/2 cup hot water
Instructions
- Combine the honey and hot water in a container with a tight fitting lid. Seal then shake until well combined.
- If you have really hard or crusty old honey, place the water and honey in a small pot on the stove. Heat over medium heat until honey has softened and is well combined with the water.
Notes
Honey can be stored in a container at room temeprature for a few weeks. If you'd like to keep it longer, refrigerate.
